A full-size, three-row SUV from Ford that has been in continuous production since 1997, the Expedition is the flagship and most luxurious SUV from the American car maker in the KSA car market.

Currently in its fifth generation, which is based on Ford’s T3 platform, the Ford Expedition is available in Saudi Arabia in five variants – Active, Active Touring, Platinum, Tremor and Stealth Performance. The colour choices for the Ford Expedition are Oxford White, Agate Black, Stone Blue, Space White, Star White, Glacier Grey, Wild Green (only offered in Tremor and Stealth Performance) and Dark Matter.

Exterior

With this fifth-generation version, the Ford Expedition has a healthy dose of novelty and freshness while it continues to be one of the largest SUVs on sale in the country. There are modern touches at the front and rear, which make this new Expedition an attention-grabbing gargantuan on wheels.

The front profile of the Ford Expedition has been heavily tweaked in this new generation, and now features an aggressive grille, which, along with the headlamps, is placed within an extremely wide fascia. The grille has different finishes and inserts in all the variants, with the Tremor getting an off-road-specific design. The vertically stacked LED reflector headlamps have C-shaped, large LED DRLs surrounding them.

The side profile of the Ford Expedition is more or less unchanged, with the SUV having a massive wheelbase, huge door panels and fenders and tall alloy wheels, which measure up to 22 inches in Platinum and Stealth Performance variants.

There are subtle changes at the rear too, with the Expedition now having vertical LED tail lamps on the sides that have a gloss black finish panel over the boot lid between them. This gloss black panel also has auxiliary LED lights, with the Expedition getting a powered liftgate.

Interior

The cabin of the Ford Expedition has made an even more significant leap forward in terms of design and equipment list, with the SUV now having several first-for-Ford design elements, such as a ‘squircle’ multi-functional, power-adjustable and heated steering wheel and an offset fully-digital cockpit placed far behind the steering wheel. This 24-inch full-TFT cockpit has twin screens for the instrument console and primary infotainment system.

The centre console of the dashboard of the Ford Expedition also has an additional 13.2-inch landscape touchscreen to control the three-zone automatic climate control and other vehicular settings and functions. This secondary screen is flanked by vertical AC vents on its sides and has a slanted layer below it that houses the drive mode knob.

The Ford Expedition is loaded with several other premium features like a 22-speaker Bang-&-Olufsen audio system, panoramic vista sunroof, perimeter LED lighting with 360 zone lighting, unique luxury leather seats, power-adjustable seats in all three rows, 10-way powered driver and 8-way powered co driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats with massage function, two wireless chargers, ambient lighting and more.

Engine and performance

All the variants of the Ford Expedition in Saudi Arabia are offered with just one powertrain combination – a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This twin-turbo V6 engine is further offered in two states of tune – 440 bhp power and 691 Nm torque in Tremor and Stealth Performance variants, and 400 bhp power and 650 Nm torque in other variants. This powertrain has a maximum claimed fuel efficiency of 10.3 kmpl.

Comfort and Suspension

The fifth-generation Ford Expedition has witnessed massive changes under its skin, with its T3 platform accompanied by an all-new suspension setup – double wishbone at the front and independent multi-link at the rear. This adaptive suspension setup now features a modified ride height and is further assisted by up to seven drive modes – Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Slippery. The Tremor and Stealth Performance variants also get stiffer shocks for a more controlled body roll and composure at higher speeds.

Safety and Braking

The Ford Expedition is packed with advanced safety features in its Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 suite of ADAS features. This package consists of pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, 360-degree parking camera, rear view camera, auto high beam headlamps, reverse brake assist, front and rear parking sensors, post-collision braking, driver monitoring system, evasive steering assist, active park assist 2.0 and intelligent adaptive cruise control. More features like ten airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, hill start assist, hill descent control, electronic stability control and tyre pressure monitoring system are also present in the Expedition.

Conclusion

With extravagance written all over it, the Ford Expedition stamps its authority over all the other SUVs with its sheer size, cabin space, comfort and luxury. While this fifth-generation version doesn’t get a V8 engine option, it makes up for that void with more than enough performance from its twin-turbo V6 engine.
