Kia Announces The Niro PHEV Model Will Be Discontinued For 2026
SAUDI ARABIA: Kia has announced that the Kia Niro PHEV model will be dead for 2026. The company stated, “Due to changing market conditions, the 2026 Niro PHEV will no longer be available in the US market.” The discontinuation is not a surprising announcement, considering the PHEV model seemed like the weak link of the Niro lineup. The gas-powered and EV models were popular and offered excellent service, but the PHEV model always seemed to be playing catch-up.

The Kia Niro petrol and EV models have been confirmed to stick around through 2027. The dwindling sales of the PHEV model are being considered as the reason for the model’s discontinuation. The Niro is not the highest-selling vehicle in the Kia lineup, but it has enough popularity that the model is not being discontinued as a whole. The PHEV accounted for the lowest sales among the three variants; however, this is purely speculative since Kia does not share car sales figures divided among powertrain options.
Plug-in hybrids may work in some parts of the world, but they’re also losing their popularity significantly. The discontinuation of the Kia Niro PHEV is not the first plug-in hybrid model that’s being discontinued. This is a trend that has become quite popular among various brands. However, on the contrary, brands like Toyota are doubling down on hybrids and stating they will be the future instead of focusing on pure EVs.

No matter the side of the equation you’re on, PHEV models do provide some relief for the eco-conscious driver. However, you can think of them like the middle child that often gets ignored in favour of true ICE performance by purists and technology lovers in favour of EVs. For consumer automakers like Kia, the decision to get rid of PHEV seems best as it allows them to focus more deeply on their EV and ICE offerings specifically.
