The Audi A4 To Get a New Life With an EV Future Plan
SAUDI ARABIA: The Audi A4 is one of the most popular nameplates of the Audi lineup. That’s why it came as a shock to most when last year Audi decided to kill the A4 in favour of the A5 Sportback. The decision also came on the heels of a strategy that seemed baffling to most, as Audi decided to use even-numbered cars from their lineup to represent the EVs and odd-numbered nameplates to represent ICE cars.
Even though this bizarre plan was later abandoned, the A4 was still a casualty. In a surprise move since, Audi has announced that the A4 will be back and, as predicted by their since-abandoned nomenclature system, as an EV. The news was confirmed by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, who said Audi is developing a new EV A4 was a part of “the biggest change in the history of the company.” The CEO also mentioned that he acknowledges Audi lost its way in the last few years, and the brand is trying to redefine the future of electric sports cars with their Concept C car, which is being used as Audi’s statement of intent.
The A4’s comeback will take a few years at least, as the CEO hinted that the car will be built on the Volkswagen group’s upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is set to launch in 2028 at the earliest. While their plans sound promising, Audi will be late to the compact EV sedan game as both BMW’s upcoming i3 and Mercedes’s C-Class EV will debut next year in 2026. The new SSP architecture that’ll be used to build the A4 will be the VW Group’s first software-defined vehicle. This will also make the A4 a worthy competitor of the i3 and C-Class EV from BMW and Mercedes, respectively.
