The New Mercedes-Benz GLC Brings Back The One Thing Customers Have Been Asking For A Long Time: Physical Buttons

SAUDI ARABIA: While this is great news for auto lovers and people looking to buy a new Mercedes soon, the automaker has not revamped their entire interior just yet. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC was released almost a month ago, and it made headlines for its ridiculously large display on the dashboard. However, there was another small detail that should be commended that didn’t get the hype it deserved. Mercedes-Benz brought back physical buttons, rollers, and switches on the steering wheel of the car.

Mercedes GLC New Cabin

This new design may not look the best, considering it is not meeting the proper criteria of either a completely futuristic car or an iconic ICE car, either; however, this design choice is not an accident. The software boss of Mercedes, Mr. Magnus Östberg, told Autocar during the Munich Motor Show, “The data shows us the physical buttons are better, and that's why we put them back in.” The company cleared the air that, as per their data, real buttons and switches are “very important for certain age groups and certain populations.”

Mercedes GLC Updated Cabin

So, where are they getting this data from? The company has been harvesting data from its first software-defined car, the CLA. This has helped them make changes as per the needs of consumers, and the company has stated that the button-filled steering wheel will become standard across most future Mercedes vehicles.

The trend of bringing back physical buttons has become a thing among car manufacturers, with big names like BMW and Volkswagen bringing buttons back, too. For BMW, its iX3 has a physical volume roller as the brand realised that it can’t get rid of it. Companies like Hyundai have always kept physical buttons in their cabin for safety purposes.
