Rimac Is Developing A New Frontier With SSBs For Future Bugatti

SAUDI ARABIA: What are SSBs? Solid-state batteries. They are to lithium-ion battery packs what SSDs (Solid State Drives) were for HDDs (Hard Disk Drives). For years, the automotive world has sought to find a solution for the size and weight of battery packs in EVs. They increase the weight of cars and also put a lot of pressure on the handling and tyres. SSBs were supposed to be the brand-new technology that would solve all these problems. 

As per available information, Rimac is working on developing a new solid-state battery architecture in partnership with cell manufacturer ProLogium alongside materials experts at Mitsubishi. The development is going on in full swing, and it is expected that the newly developed SSBs will be 30 kg lighter than a normal 100 kWh battery pack. The weight change will be influenced by energy-dense batteries, which will be made using a new ultra-stiff composite housing.

Further Developments Beyond SSBs

While a lighter battery is an important step for the future of EVs, there are other parts too. Rimac is also developing a new “e-axles” for EVs that will be an all-in-one units that combine the motor, gearbox, and control electronics. The new units will be designed to be incredibly power-dense. This technology of the “e-axles” will be used in a mystery SUV in Saudi Arabia’s homegrown startup CEER.
