Toyota Forced To Recall Over 1 Million Cars Across Brands For Rear Camera Issues
SAUDI ARABIA: In a figure that would shock anyone, Toyota has had to announce the recall of over 1 million cars across its multiple brands for rear camera issues. As per the information shared by the brand, the affected cars may have a defect that prevents the feed from the rearview camera of the car from freezing on the infotainment screen.

This risk could happen if drivers performed certain actions in quick succession just after starting the vehicle. Toyota informed that they started investigating this issue in April 2024 after receiving field reports from Japan. During the test, the automaker discovered a software problem that could lead to this error. As a result, the brand was forced to announce the recall of over a million cars as this failure could make the cars not pass Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in the US.

As per the recall report, the automaker discovered that if a vehicle is shifted into reverse within 0.7 seconds to 2.6 seconds of ignition, the rear view camera feed on the infotainment screen may freeze for up to 1.8 seconds. This poses a serious safety risk as a child, another vehicle, an an animal can cross the vehicle’s path in the period. This could lead to a risk of accidents. In technical terms, the inoperative display issue is happening because of two 23-millisecond camera optical alignment data writing processes that occur randomly during the first 12.5 seconds after ignition.
