Nissan Bids Farewell To Beloved GT-R As Production Run Ends After 18 Years
SAUDI ARABIA: Nissan is ending the production of the beloved GT-R after an 18-year run. The car has sold around 48,000 units over the course of its production run, which started at Nissan’s Tochigi plant in 2007. The final production model is a Premium Edition T-Spec in Midnight Purple.
The CEO and President of Nissan, Ivan Espinosa, has said, “To the many fans of the GT-R worldwide, I want to tell you this isn’t a goodbye to the GT-R forever, it’s our goal for the GT-R nameplate to one day make a return. All I can ask is for your patience. While we don’t have a precise plan finalized today, the GT-R will evolve and reemerge in the future.”
Why Did The GT-R Production Run End?
After 18 years, it is no surprise that the brand has decided to end the production run of the GT-R. There are additional factors, too, such as Nissan’s financial hardships, which are not a secret to anyone anymore. Having a supercar in your lineup is great to woo enthusiasts, but it is not enough to pull the brand out of its dire financial situation.
Nissan is actively trying to cut costs and has even cut 20,000 jobs under its new recovery plan. The company is also actively trying to consolidate the build platforms for its cars from 13 to 7. They are also working actively to reduce part complexity by up to 70%.
Considering all these factors, it isn’t surprising that the company has bid farewell to its well-loved model. However, as shared by multiple Nissan leaders, the GT-R and the R36 platform as a part of Nissan’s future plan.
